The Region's Councils
The Nelson Tasman regions is governed by two councils, Nelson City and Tasman District. Both councils are Unitary Authorities which means that they are responsible for both territorial and regional services.
Unitary Authorities
Territorial Authority Services
- Fresh water
- Rubbish collection and disposal, litter control
- Sewage treatment
- Parks reserves and leisure facilities
- Roads and streetlighting
- Control of land subdivision, building and resource consents processing
- Dog control
- Libraries and museums
- Food premises and liquor licensing
Regional Authority Services
- Bio-security/pest control
- Civil defence and emergency management
- River and flood control
- Environmental protection
- Regional land transport
- Water quality and quality regulation
- Maritime navigation and safety
- Some building control and consents processing (eg. dams)
Some services and functions are carried out by both Regional and Terrirtorial authorities:
- Elections and public meetings
- Local by-law administration
